Values, Democracy and Social Change: New Comparative Findings from the European Values Study and World Values Survey
This panel invites comparative research examining the relationship between changing social and political values, public attitudes, and democratic governance. We welcome contributions investigating how citizens understand and evaluate democracy, support for democratic institutions and principles, political trust, institutional legitimacy, political participation, and broader processes of democratic resilience and transformation. Research exploring longitudinal trends, generational differences, and cross-national variation in values and political orientations is particularly encouraged. Studies using WVS/EVS data, independently or in combination with other comparative datasets, are especially welcome.
Comparative Values Research in Transition: Methodological Challenges and Innovations in the European Values Study and World Values Survey
This panel focuses on methodological challenges and innovations in international comparative values research. We invite contributions examining the quality, reliability, validity, and comparability of survey measurements across countries, survey waves, and data collection modes. Topics of particular interest include measurement equivalence, sampling and coverage, non-response, questionnaire translation, response styles, interviewer and mode effects, weighting, and data quality. We also welcome research on methodological experiments, online and mixed-mode survey designs, and the implications of methodological decisions for substantive findings and interpretations of social and political change.
Abstract Submission
Abstracts of up to 350 words must be submitted before November 4 deadline through the IPSA Conference System. Authors should select “RC17 – Comparative Public Opinion” as the track, and then relevant panel. An IPSA online account is required for submission, but IPSA membership is not required at the submission stage. Authors will receive the outcome of the abstract selection process on 22 January 2027.
We warmly encourage members of the WVS community and colleagues working in comparative social and political research to submit their work and join us in Rome in 2027.
Please feel free to share this call with colleagues and research networks for whom these panels may be relevant.
Kind regards,
World Values Survey Association Secretariat
